Which materials are required for sublimation printing?

To do sublimation printing, you basically need 4 main materials and a few auxiliary pieces of equipment. Here are the necessities for sublimation printing:

Main Materials

Sublimation Ink: This is the most critical component of sublimation printing. Unlike regular inks, it contains heat-sensitive pigments and turns into a gas at high temperatures. This ink should only be used in printers specially produced for sublimation.

Sublimation Printer: This is typically a desktop inkjet printer that can use sublimation ink. Specific models from brands like Epson or Ricoh are the most preferred for this job. Sublimation ink is put into the printer instead of regular ink.

Sublimation Transfer Paper: This paper is specially coated to hold sublimation ink in the best way and to transfer it most effectively onto the material under heat. The ink remains vibrant and sharp on this paper and is easily released when heat is applied.

Heat Press Machine: It is essential for the final stage of the printing process. It applies high heat and pressure simultaneously, allowing the ink to turn from a solid state to a gas and permeate into the material. There are various heat press machines for different products, such as mug presses, flat presses (for t-shirts), and cap presses.

Auxiliary Equipment

Sublimation-Ready Materials: Not all materials can be sublimated. The surface of the product to be printed on must be polymer-coated (white or light-colored) to hold the ink. For t-shirts, fabrics containing at least 60% polyester are ideal. Products like mugs, keychains, and phone cases must have a special sublimation coating.

Heat-Resistant Tape: Used to prevent the transfer paper from shifting during printing. It is durable at high temperatures and leaves no residue.

Teflon or Greaseproof Paper: Used to protect the top and bottom surfaces of the heat press from ink stains. This keeps your machine clean and maintains the quality of your subsequent prints.

These pieces of equipment form the cornerstones for a successful and professional sublimation printing process.
